FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Mockingjay Hunger Games Acts of Goodness Challenge”

by Tracee Orman
7th - 12th Grade

Students build character and integrity when they participate in random acts of kindness. This project challenge relates to Katniss's technique for coping with depression in Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins.
Students observe and document "acts of goodness", then present their observations in a written report or presentation. Most likely, witnessing acts of goodness will inspire students to pay it forward.
A great culminating "feel good" activity to the final book in the Hunger Games trilogy.

FREE SCIENCE LESSON - “Cellular Respiration Word Game Review”

by Science Stuff
7th - 10th Grade

Cellular respiration is one of the hardest topics a biology teacher has to teach during their course. Its very abstract nature makes it particularly hard for many students to comprehend. I try to give my students as many review materials as possible on respiration. This particular product serves as both a review for my test and as some FUN extra credit.

Given the definition of a term, the student must write the word or words that best fit the description. They fill in a series of blanks in which one of the blanks is boxed. When they are finished, the boxed in letters spell out a secret message. Make sure you know what the secret message is before you pass this out to your students as it involves the giving of extra credit points on a test! : )

There are 28 vocabulary words used in this exercise that are commonly used in a unit on cellular respiration. The vocabulary words are: pyruvic acid, protons, glucose, aerobic, matrix, adenosine triphosphate, ATP synthase, water, adenine, respiration, oxygen, lactic acid, Kreb's cycle, alcoholic, phosphate, glycolysis, citric acid, NADH, electron transport chain, cristae, mitochondria, carbon dioxide, fermentation, cytoplasm, thirty eight, anaerobic, ribose, and acetate.

This was written for my high school biology students, but I feel it is appropriate for all life science students in grades 7 - 10.

Answer key is included. Enjoy!

Testing Time Linky Party - Test Prep Tournaments For Any Grade and Any Subject

Empowering Little Learners - Testing Time Linky

Jennifer Kadar created a Testing Time Linky Party at her blog, Empowering Little Learners.  Go to http://empoweringlittlelearners.blogspot.com/2012/02/high-stakes-testing-link-up.html to find out how other teachers prepare for their state tests.
Here are my responses to Jennifer’s questions...
  1. Where do you teach?   I teach in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
  2. What grade do you teach?   I teach third grade.
  3. What tests do you give during this time of year and/or all year?  My students take three Language Arts and Math district mandated tests to get ready for the California Standards Test in May.
  4. Does the test count for anything for you personally? (Is it attached to any of your pay, etc.)  My school district has not tied our teaching salary with test scores, but there always seem to be a discussion about it for the future.
  5. What do you do to prepare for the test?  I prepare my students for the state standardized test beginning on the first day of school.  I teach the third grade standards and beyond by the end of March.  I spend all of April going back to everything we have learned since September and show my students how it is connected.  My students have fun reviewing for the Reading and Math tests using my tournaments.  They are more than ready to take the California Standards Test in May.
  6. Can you use the data from the test to help drive your instruction?  I use the test data and am very strategic when it comes to helping students during independent time.  Whether it is a reading or math standard, I work with each student on an individual basis until that student has a grasp of the concept.
  7. If you are comfortable, how do you feel about the test?  I truly believe that the state tests should never be tied with a teacher’s salary.  The results of specific classrooms should not be published for the general public.  Two years ago, The Los Angeles Times provided the names of teachers in the Los Angeles Unified School District and their class’ test results.  This is a bad use of test scores and will only lead to an end to teacher collaboration as teachers become worried about their students’ test scores compared to other teachers’ classroom scores.
  8. How long do the tests take?  We spend three days taking the Language Arts portion of the California Standards Test and three days taking the Math section.
  9. Do you have any tips?  I try to make reviewing for the upcoming state tests fun.  My best selling Teachers Pay Teachers product is “Test Prep Tournaments For Any Grade and Any Subject.”  It has 12 test prep tournaments that I use to review concepts for our three district mandated tests and for the California Standards Test.   For example, one month before the state test, I give my students 97 math questions.  These questions are provided by the Department of Education and are the released questions of past state tests.  I then use a different tournament each day to go over each of the test questions.  It usually takes about two weeks to review the questions and answers.  My students then retake the 97 questions and they are able to have the higher grade of the two tests recorded in my grade book.  Thus, my students really pay attention during the tournaments and are more than ready to take the state test in May.   My tournaments and the strategic way I prepare my students for the state tests work.   When comparing the 2010-2011 state test results of my students in 2nd grade and how well they did with me in 3rd grade; 3 of my students went up three levels, 7 students went up two levels, and 6 students went up 1 level on our state tests.  Seven of my students stayed at the same level (6 students were Advanced and 1 student was Proficient.)
Whether or not you agree with the emphasis of standardized state tests, they are here to stay.  For my students, they are able to see for themselves how much they have learned in one year in my class.  Go to Jennifer’s Testing Time Linky Party and see other tips to get your students ready for the upcoming state tests.

FREE LANGUAGE ARTS LESSON - “Rocket Letters and Numbers: Handwriting Fluency FREE”

by Deedee Wills
Kindergarten - 1st Grade

We all know that fluent letter and numeral formation is so important in primary students. Students must be able to form these symbols quickly and automatically.
This is a daily routine that is well loved in my kindergarten classroom. This activity takes only minutes with minimal teacher prep.
This is a great way to monitor your students progress and can be adapted to meet your students’ needs.
Enjoy!

FREE MISC. LESSON - “10 Misconceptions About Spanish Language and Its Speakers”

by spanishplans
5th - 12th Grade

This 12 slide powerpoint features 10 statements which ask students to decide if they are true or false. Click ahead, and it will tell you the answer and also give an explanation.

These are 10 things that a lot of students don't know, but they definitely should. Features common misconceptions about the Spanish language worldwide and in the US as well as about the people who speak Spanish.

This powerpoint should last a 50 minute class period. Some slides also include additional links in the "notes" section for more information.

Great lesson to talk about stereotypes and perceptions. One of my biggest pet peeves is when a person is called "Spanish" because they speak Spanish, which is something I hear a lot, not just from children, but from adults as well. The goal of this lesson is to put an end to ignorance and inform people about what reality is.

FREE MATH LESSON - “FREE Names for Numbers, Grade 1, March Match Math, PDF”

by Wise Owl Factory
1st Grade

The Everyday math program has many pages of math boxes where children have to write more names for numbers. These games will help children understand more about this concept. A name for the numeral 2 may be 1+1, 4-3, or 10-1 for instance. Provide some hands-on practice for students who may need some motivation and fun working with math. Names for a person are presented on two of the pages (boy, cousin, baseball player and so on) to help children understand one person can have many names. Extend this idea to numbers with this game. The ANSWER KEY is the original document, but you will be cutting apart the cards printed for the matching game. There are some cards with just a number to provide differentiation (some children will be able to match one number and one number name). These materials may be used in various ways in the classroom. 26 pages, PDF

Victoria Leon's Lessons

Test Prep Tournaments For Any Grade and Any Subject
by Victoria Leon

Revised version now has 12 test prep tournaments. Students will have fun reviewing for your state's standardized tests, district tests, and classroom tests. The 72 pages include football, baseball, and tic-tac-toe game boards & specific directions for 12 tournaments.

The tournaments may be used for any grade and any subject, but you need to supply the questions you want your students to study. Go to the Internet to access your state's released questions of past standardized tests. Use questions from test prep booklets or your classroom textbooks. Write your own questions to review the skills you want your students to learn.

Students may review spelling words, vocabulary definitions, and important events in social studies in whole class tournaments or at a learning center. Students may work in cooperative groups to solve computation problems or word problems.

These tournaments work! My students took the 2009 California Standards Test. When comparing my students' California Standards Test scores with me and how they had done the year before, one student went from Far Below Basic in second grade to Below Basic to Basic to Proficient with me in third grade and went up three levels. Three of my students went up two levels. Nine of my students went up one level. Three students stayed in their same level from second grade to third grade (one student was Proficient and stayed Proficient & two students were Advanced and stayed Advanced.) The final student in my class last year did not have a second grade test score, but scored Advanced in my class. I receive similar test scores each year.
